Here are wise words from Carrie Lippincott OTR\/L<br \/>\n<em>\u2026consider the child&#8217;s thumb use.\u2028\u2028I&#8217;ve found that children hold their pencil vertically to avoid flexing \u2028their thumb interphalangeal joint. I work on getting children more \u2028comfortable with flexing their thumb (tweezers use, using a sparkle \u2028wheel and a pickle fork or 3 pt grabber). I also work on improving \u2028distal control of the thumb\/index finger coordination by working on \u2028improving finger control in small spaces ( such as drawing small loops \u2028in a picture or using a pushpin to poke holes in reinforcer circles \u2028stuck to paper with an old mouse pad underneath).<\/em><br \/>\nAn idea from Kristi White, another pediatric occupational therapist:<br \/>\n<em>I also have a\u00a0box with a latch that is locked and the child has to access it with a key.\u00a0 Inside the box are tasks designed to increase thumb and index finger strength.<br \/>\n<\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Too often children have a tense or awkward hold on writing tools.
